San Antonio Trip: Day Two

After a lovely breakfast courtesy of the Whartons, Adam and I headed out to explore San Antonio! We drove around some of his old haunts....and even drove to the more ritzy areas of San Antonio to see the fancy houses. Fun, fun! Sadly, we didn't see any famous houses because all of those are (wisely) in gated communities.

Then we went to the Alamo Cafe to meet Maynard Leese, a friend of Adam's from Northside, for lunch. It was a beautiful place, and it had delicious food! Conversation with Maynard was absolutely delightful.
Copelands at Alamo Cafe!

Maynard, Adam, and I outside the Alamo Cafe

The back area of the Alamo Cafe...great landscaping,
especially the preservation of the live oaks all around the restaurant.

After that, Adam and I took a quick jaunt into Breckenridge Park. It was a sunny, clear day, so the parking lot was crowded, but we took a few far-away shots of the San Antonio zoo and spent the rest of our time exploring the Japanese Tea Gardens.

I liked this pic of the San Antonio Zoo (even though we didn't visit)

ohhh, spiky plants! yucca, yucca!

Outside the tea gardens, this is the one of the main quarry buildings--the circular one is a kiln.

The Japanese Tea Gardens were created from a man-made quarry that was bought by the city to be converted into parkland. Although a Japanese gardener created the space in the early 1900s, it has undergone several reconstructions and redesigns. Most notably, the gardens were renamed the Chinese Sunken Gardens during WWII and some of the years thereafter. Luckily, their original name and original design has been restored and updated smartly. If you're in San Antonio for only 2 hours, spend ALL your time here! I LOVED it!! The stonework, the design (it's a big, empty hole in the ground, but they put in ponds, waterfalls, plants, bridges, cozy stonework, etc to make it feel like a bit of paradise!), everything was excellent!

Sign about the gardens! I like to read everything in sight!

At the entrance of the tea garden, there is a huge stone temple structure.
It's breathtaking, and made entirely of old stone from the quarry.

In the center of the temple

The roof was very Polynesian in style--but the beams and the stones were just remarkable.

Look at all that gorgeous stonework!

A view from the back of the quarry looking toward the front.

All the bridges in the quarry had the same fantastic stonework--and the bridges were so whimsical!

This waterfall cascaded along the back of the quarry,
helping to supply the water features of the place.

I'm on a bridge that's covered in ivy! (Anyone catch the Timberlake joke there?)

There were lots of coy in the ground ponds--and they were MONSTER coy! Huge!

Adam, relaxing by the waterfall

A good view of the quarry basin...and of us smooching! :)

So picturesque! (View from top of stone temple)

We were there just as spring was starting, so here's some look at some of the blooms that were a-budding!

After the gardens, Adam and I spent some time with the Utleys, a family that went to Brasil with his family in 1998. We had a couple of hours chatting with them, and then we headed back to the Whartons. A whole clan of Whartons, significant others, and Adam and I went to Cris Madrid's for dinner. It's one of San Antonio's most famous hamburger joints, and it was DELICIOUS! The surrounding area was a little sketchy (and hard to find...go there with native San Antonions!), but the hamburgers were worth it!

After dinner, we played a tough game of Pictionary (girls vs. boys). Although the girls lost, we made a valiant attempt. But I'm sure that my horrible pictures contributed to the loss. (How do you draw Rodeo Drive or Out of Luck?) Anyway, it was a ton of fun, but I was ready for bed at the end of the night!

San Antonio Trip: Day One

Adam and I visited San Antonio during our spring break...and, boy, did we pack in a lot of fun! Adam lived in San Antonio and worked at a San Antonio church, Northside Church of Christ, for a couple of summer internships in college and then for 5 years after college, before he left to earn his M.A. at Alabama. Needless to say, he has a LOT of friends in San Antonio! Luckily, most of them still liked him (j/k! they all still love him!), and I got to be introduced to many of them. Everyone was so welcoming and gracious; I really hope we get to go back very soon. :)

Day One: Adam and I each worked at our jobs from 8 a.m. until noon on Friday, March 4th. We had spent the evening of the 3rd wildly packing and (in my case) trying to figure clothes/shoes/things that I could live without for a week. So, I was a bit tired on the 4th...but I had an insane amount of work to do: visit two schools to promote Arboretum programs, enter all the scientific/common names of all the wild and exotic flowers in the Arboretum for a project concocted on Wednesday and that would be implemented the next week, correspondence with tour groups, and a few other things. At least it kept me busy...and I had fun! Finally, though, it was time to travel!!

Traveling...in our matching t-shirts! We got these for our honeymoon,
so we decided to have a new "travel matching" shirt each year. :)

After I raced home at noon, Adam and I scurried around--eating, walking Oliver, packing the car, thinking of things we forgot. We then drove to the airport and boarded the teeny-tiny plane right around 2:30. We took a flight from Shenandoah Airport (teeny-tiny, but close to our house) to Dulles. Our next plane left a little bit late, but the pilot made up some time in the air, and we landed in San Antonio at 8:30 their time. 'Twas nice weather (maybe just the slightest chill in the air) when we landed, which I appreciated since Virginia has been WAY too cold for me.

Adam at the airport....he likes his mac products fo-schizzle.

We picked up our luggage, checked in for our rental car, and were impressed with how quickly we arrived at our pretty rental car. The first thing we did in the car: Why, turn on the Spurs game, of course! The Spurs were playing the Miami Heat and were doing pretty awesome already (ahead by 12 or so in the 1st quarter). But the biggest surprise was that Tony Parker was playing! Parker had been injured a few games beforehand and wasn't expected to play anytime soon (a disappointment, since we would be going to Sunday's game), so that was a happy omen.

Our cute silver rental car!
(Thank goodness I didn't have to drive in San Antonio traffic!)

Adam drove me through a bit of San Antonio as we made our way to the home of Tina and Greg Wharton, with whom we stayed on the 4th and 5th. Tina had worked closely with Adam at Northside and, after introductions, we chatted, ate pizza, and had a fun visit. The Spurs helped make it magical by smashing LeBron and Co. by more than 30 points. :) Then Adam and I went to bed and pretty much crashed.

Valentine's Sweets

There's been so much happening this month, but I had to share our Valentine's Day celebration. (Sorry it's so late!!) This was our first Valentine's Day as a married couple, so we did a couple of different things and gave small but thoughtful presents. :)

On Saturday, February 12th, we went to Cross Keys Vineyards Valentine's Day dinner. Since we got married there, we figured it was a pretty good place to celebrate love, romance, and happiness! It was DELICIOUS! Great food, fantastic wine, romantic seating, and just a place to revel in love.
Excited to go inside Cross Keys on a chilly February eve.

The 5-course menu with drink pairings: Appetizer w/ Pinot Noir 2008, Soup w/ Meritage 2008, Salad w/ Fiore 2010 (the new Fiore was yummy!!), Chicken Entree w/ Chardonnay 2009, and Chocolate dessert w/ decadent Tavern 2008

They had roses for the ladies...

And candlelight to see my sweet husband...

You can see some of the delicious dessert! Yum, yum!!

At our table at the end of the evening

Leaving after a great night!

Next on the Valentine's Day tour: We made homemade presents this year, which was quite fun! And we gave each other the presents whenever they happened to be done, since we couldn't wait to share. So I gave Adam his on Saturday, and he gave me his gift on Sunday.

I made Adam a bowl of "fortune cookies" made via a "recipe" from Martha Stewart.
Why? Because he loves fortune cookies!

"Recipe": Cut out a felt circle, glue wire and ribbon inside, so that it can bend like a fortune cookie,
then stuff with candy (dark chocolate Hershey's kisses in this case) and a fortune! :)

I think he "loves" the gift??

He took a photo of a Shakespeare sonnet, with his ring balanced to make a heart in the book.
Really creative and I love it! hearts, shakespeare, rings, love...it's pretty perfect for me!

This is a picture of the pic + frame that he gave me.

On actual Valentine's Day, we decided to have a quiet dinner at home with Mr. Oliver and each other. We cooked together and just relaxed!

Our dinner on 2/14: Fish, mixed veggies, a Gerwurtzmeiner, bread and herb-infused olive oil

Sweets to my sweet!

I hope everyone had a lovely Valentine's Day and continues to love their loved ones all year round!
